April 24, 2003

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Washington State women's golf team battled harsh weather to finish day one of the Pacific-10 Championships in eighth place at the Par 72, 6,160 yard trysting Tree Golf Club at Corvallis, Ore.

Maria Kostina and Kim Welch shot identical scores of 5-over par to finish day one knotted at 24th. Stephanie Parsley is tied for 34th, followed by Jay-Lee Longbottom at 46th, Donna Bell at a tie for 52nd, and Ashleigh Gilhuly in 57th place as an individual.

Head Coach Walt Williams said, "even though it rained all day, and at one point hailed, we played through the worst of the weather and still came out pretty good."

As a team the Cougars sit in eighth place ahead of Oregon and Oregon State, and just five shots back of seventh place Stanford. WSU will pair with the Cardinal tomorrow for the second round of the 2003 Pac-10 Championships.
