Kim Welch Shoots Course Record and Leads By Seven Strokes At Duck Invite

March 10, 2003

EUGENE, Ore. - Kim Welch shot a course record 68 in the second round to lead the Washington State women's golf team to the top of the leader board after two rounds at the Duck Invitational.

Welch opened the day at the Par-72, 5,953 yard Shadow Hills Golf Course with an opening round score of 70 before blistering the course for a record 4-under 68 for a two round total of 6-under, and a seven stroke lead. If Welch's lead holds up, she will have defended her individual crown from last year and add another championship to her golfing resume.

The rest of the Cougar team came out firing as three more golfers finished the second round in the Top 10. Jay-Lee Longbottom is in fifth place (76-75, +7), Maria Kostina is in a tie for sixth (75-77, +8), and Katharine Dorris finished in eighth place (74-79, +9) heading into final round play. Rounding out the Cougar contingent, Ashleigh Gilhuly is tied for 16th (78-78, +12) as an individual, and Stephanie Parsley cracked the Top 25 with a tie for 23rd (79-79, +14).

Washington State dominated the field of eleven through two rounds, amassing a 14-stroke lead heading into tomorrow's action. A win would make it three straight team titles to start out the spring.
