March 8, 2005

PINEHURST, N.C. - Sisters Anastasia and Maria Kostina each tied for third place shooting 227 (+11), leading the Washington State women's golf team to the team title at the Pinehurst Challenge, Tuesday, at the par-72, 6,009-yard Pinehurst #8.

For Anastasia Kostina, the tournament marked the seventh top eight finish in seven tournaments this season. Kostina is now third on WSU's all-time list for top 10 finishes in a season, two back of senior two-time All-American Kim Welch who finished with nine top 10s in 2003.

Welch finished tied for sixth, shooting 229 (+13). This spring Welch has finished in the top six in all three tournaments, and has finished in the top six in four of seven tournaments this season.

"We had three golfers finish in the top 10 and I am very excited about that," said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams.

Senior Jay-Lee Longbottom recorded her 20th career top 25 finish, tying for 21st with 238 (+22). The finish moved Longbottom into a tie for third (Tasha Browner, '02) on WSU's career list for top 25 finishes.

The quartet led WSU to its second team title in three tournaments this spring. With a team total of 918 (+54), the Cougars won the tournament by 21 strokes.

"There were probably 10 regional teams there," Williams said. "It was a tough field and we won by 21 strokes."

The Cougars held a 14 stroke lead heading into the final round, and were able to increase their lead despite weather that brought about an hour and a half rain delay.

Shooting 251 (+35), redshirt sophomore Heather O'Leary rounded out the scoring for the Cougars.
