YORBA LINDA, Calif. - The Washington State women's golf team rebounded from a tough first day in the Gold Rush presented by Farmers and climbed from 11th to sixth place Tuesday to finish the tournament. The Cougar women carded the lowest single-round score of the competition in the final round (301, +13).

WSU freshman Rachel Lewis and junior Mallory Kent led the last-round surge for the Cougars, each carding scores of 2-over (74). Sophomore Kristen Rue was close behind with a 75 (3-over) in the last 18 holes. Rue led the Cougars for the tournament, finishing tied for 18th place (238, +22). Cougar sophomore Lindsay Harmon followed Rue's efforts by joining her in the top 25 (tied for 23rd) with a tournament score of 239 (+23). Senior Emma Betland tied for 42nd place (245, +29).

"I am so proud of our team," Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said. "To come back from the day we had yesterday with the lowest round of the tournament shows the heart these players have."

The Cougar women's team improved 23 strokes on its first-round performance and 26 strokes on its second-round effort in the third round of the Gold Rush presented by Farmers. The team finished 88-over par for the tournament, just one stroke behind fifth-place Portland State. Long Beach State, the tournament's host, won the tournament team title (917, +53). The individual title was won by Raychelle Santos of Gonzaga who finished 8-over par.

The next competition for the WSU women's golf team will be the Westbrook Invitational. The tournament will be hosted February 24-25 by Wisconsin in Peoria, Ariz.
