Cougars Shine at the Portland Fall Classic

Portland, Ore. - The Washington State University varsity women's rowing team launched three varsity eights and two varsity fours at the Portland Fall Classic Sunday morning. The Cougars claimed the top spot in all five races they competed in. Washington State's varsity eight (bow - Mickey Aylard, Hannah deVos, Erin Schuster, Katie Dick, Mollie McCabe, Emily Starkel, Noel Christiansen, Alison Smith, coxswain - Emily Boquet) out-stroked Pac-12 opponent Oregon State en route to finishing first in the varsity eight final with a time of 17:23.

The Cougars launched two boats in the junior varsity eight final. The junior varsity eight (bow - Megan McDonald, Ella Odland, Jordan Watson, Alex Waddell, Elise Jones, Kellen Srb, Nicole Hare, Kerry Hassall, coxswain - Heidi Kim) took first in the event, posting a time of 17:24. Taking third was the second junior varsity eight (bow - Liana DeMaris, Krista Lizardi, Chloe Payne, Sarah Steger, Stephanie Hinkle, Courtney Hammer, Erin Ranney, Alyssa Rumann, coxswain - Lauren Leahy) with a time of 18:11. It finished behind Oregon State, who finished second at 17:51.

 

 

"The team took a step in the right direction today," said head coach Jane LaRiviere. "I was proud of their focus and race execution. There is a lot of competition for seats on this team and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out this week."

The Cougars also launched two varsity fours at the Portland Fall Classic. The varsity four (bow - Jennifer Hale, Kendall Boliba, Ashlee Bonahoom, Carly Johnson, coxswain - Sarah Wu) clocked the top time in the varsity four final with a time of 19:15, finishing 50 seconds ahead of second place Oregon State. Washington State's junior varsity four (bow - Carter Marks, Gina Head, Samantha Hoeper, Brianne Gould, coxswain - Rebecca Burns) finished first in its event, clocking in at 19:39.

The women's rowing team closes out its fall season in Seattle at the Head of the Lake Sunday, Nov. 4 against rival Washington.
