Cougars Have Solid Showing at Head of the Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Washington State University women's rowing finished its second regatta of the fall season Saturday at the Head of Spokane, and posted the top women's time of the regatta. The Cougars raced three varsity eights, three novice eights, and two varsity fours. During the second flight of the day (there were men's and club flights as well), the Cougars raced three varsity eight boats. Washington State's varsity eight (bow - Elise Jones, Emily Starkel, Katie Dick, Mollie McCabe, Nicole Hare, Jennifer Hale, Hannah deVos, Kerry Hassall, coxswain - Heidi Kim) finished the five-kilometer head race in the fastest time of any women's boats at the regatta with a time of 19:02, out-stroking the Gonzaga varsity eight by four seconds (19:06). The second varsity eight (bow - Ella Odland, Megan McDonald, Erin Schuster, Jordan Watson, Kellen Srb, Alison Smith, Mickey Aylard, Noel Christiansen, coxswain - Emily Boquet) and the fourth varsity eight (bow - Katelyn Maley, Carter Marks, Hannah Jacobs, Sarah Steger, Courtney Hammer, Chloe Payne, Brianne Gould, Liana DeMaris, coxswain - Raeanne Marks) finished ahead of the Gonzaga second varsity eight in times of 19:07 and 20:30.
Washington State launched a novice boat in the second flight as well. The first novice boat (bow - Lauren Celmer, Kendall Dougherty, Naomi Peters, Chloe Rogers, Sadie Church, JoAnne Bates, Alexandra Backsen, Samantha Church, coxswain - Cassandra Evans) finished with a time of 25:36. "We had some very good performances," said head coach Jane LaRiviere after racing concluded. "There were also some things we need to work on, but overall it was a good start to the season." Later in the fourth flight of the regatta, Washington State raced its two varsity four boats in a flight composed of men's boats. The first varsity four (bow - Erin Ranney, Kendall Boliba, Ashlee Bonahoom, Carly Johnson, coxswain - Sarah Wu) finished with a time of 21:47 after receiving a ten second penalty for missing a buoy. The second varsity four (bow - Stephanie Hinkle, Krista Lizardi, Samantha Hoeper, Gina Head - Rebecca Burns) completed the race in 22:37 after also receiving a 10-second penalty. In the fifth and final flight of the day were the women's second novice eight (bow - Kim Coon, Mallory Yost, Bethany Pupuva, Shannon Josie, Liz Liddington, Erica Colvin, Aley Roberts, Jaymen Dailey, coxswain Bridgett Nickeson) and the third novice eight (bow - Hayley Lawrence, Sydney Steele, Sofie Kyhnel, Chloe Rogers, Amy Jacobs, JoAnne Bates, Alexandra Backsen, Sydney Dupuis, coxswain Cassandra Vandersloot) which finished the flight in (29:28) and (29:30), respectively. Washington State also raced pair, who finished the fifth flight in (25:11) and a novice four, who finished in (23:40).
