Cougars Prepare to Battle Washington for Third Time This Spring
April 30, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. - What's Happening This Week: The Washington State University women's rowing squads will compete against the University of Washington and other regional schools in the 34th annual Opening Day Regatta at Montlake Cut in Seattle, Wash., May 3. The second varsity eight will compete against UW, Oregon State and Notre Dame in the Women's Erickson Cascade Cup. The novice eight will go head to head against three schools, including two UW boats, Oregon State and Western Washington University.
Cougars Ranked No. 13 in Nation: Although WSU's varsity eight is idle this weekend, they are ranked 13th in the April 30th US Rowing/NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Polls. Among the Pacific-10 teams ranked, defending champion University of Washington holds the top spot, with California second, Stanford fourth, USC eighth and Oregon State 14th.
Cougar Novice Eight Squad: Kelley Longman, Paige Medlock, Amy Hendershot, Kristin Sandifur, Laura Griffin, Shayna Morgan, Daiva Tacionyte, Sharon Finney, Emily Diepenheim
WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere on the Opening Day Regatta: We're using this race as a test run for the Pac-10 Championship. We have to go out there and race hard and stick with our race plan. The racing conditions aren't ideal, with it being the opening day for yachting season. There will be about a 100,000 spectators out, which will provide a lot of distractions, but it will be a good life experience for the athletes. It will be something special for them."
What Happened Last Week: Cougar rowing went undefeated at the Clemson Classic at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C., last weekend. The No. 12 varsity eight defeated two ranked teams, including No. 22 Duke and No. 20 Tennessee. The second varsity eight also swept its competition, although it was a photo finish in the match-up against Tennessee. Five members of the second varsity eight served double duty against Duke on Saturday. Courtney Goodridge, Lori Maricle, Audra Durfey, Angela Manson, and Katie Dahlgren rowed to their second victory of the day in the varsity four competition.
WSU's Last Time vs. UW: The Cougars last raced against the University of Washington, Saturday, April 12 at Wawawai Landing. The WSU squads raced well with the second varsity eight and the varsity four coming away with victories. The novice eight crew raced competitively, but lost to UW by four seconds. The varsity eight, which will not compete in the Opening Day Regatta, made a strong bid against the then second-ranked Huskies, losing to UW by only six seconds.
WSU vs. UW This Season: In addition to the April 12 regatta, WSU has faced the Huskies one other time this season. At the San Diego Crew Classic, the second varsity eight lost to UW by only two seconds. The novice eight crew defeated the Huskies at the San Diego Crew Classic, en route to defending its Crew Classic title.
