Second Varsity Eight Leads the Cougars at Silver Lake
March 24, 2007
MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - The WSU second varsity eight had a strong showing Saturday, March 24 in competition against Gonzaga at Silver Lake. WSU's second varsity eight boat finished well ahead of the Bulldogs, crossing the line at 6:44.77.
"The JV did a great job," head coach Jane LaRiviere said. "I was really please with how they came together."
The Cougar varsity eight boat finished second to the Bulldogs, but almost managed to come back. WSU's varsity eight was just a second behind with a time of 6:32.90. Gonzaga's crew won the Fawley Cup for only the second time in the history of the race, completing the course in 6:31.94.
"They had a nice looking V8," said LaRiviere. "The result was very disappointing. We stuck with the initial plan a little too long, but the knowledge we gained will help us later on."
The other victory for the Cougars came in a race between the second/third novice eight boats. The WSU "B" crew finished well ahead of the "A" novice boat and Gonzaga. The WSU crews were timed at 6:29.20 and 7:47.69, respectively. Gonzaga finished the course with a time of 7:45.61.
WSU finished second in three other races, between the third varsity eights, the novice eights, and the novice fours.
In the race between the varsity fours the Cougars placed third and fourth behind Gonzaga.
Next week the squad will split for competition. The varsity, second varsity, and the novice eight will travel to Southern California for the San Diego Crew Classic, while the remaining rowers will compete at the Husky Invite.
