PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's women's varsity eight and second varsity eight crews were victorious against Gonzaga Friday at the Head of the Snake at Wawawai Landing.

"It was great to be able to race at home," said WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "I was pleased with how our crews raced. The weather stayed cooperative and it was nice to have our fans out supporting us."

The varsity eight crew of May Lundberg (coxswain), Becca Gibson, Kasia Bloch, Laura Griffin, Angela Mason, Sarah Waterfield, Jody Thomas, Amber McKnight and Lori Maricle, completed the 5,000 meter race with a time of 17:49.9. The Zags' varsity eight crew finished the race 54 seconds after the Cougars, with a time of 18:43.6. It was the fourth time this fall that the WSU varsity eight squad has defeated the Bulldogs.

The second varsity eight crew of Kelly O' Brien (coxswain), Emily Collins, Fritha Strand-Davern, Catherine Watt, Willow English, Casey Long, Lina Brazinskaite, Carey Homan and Catherine Shirley defeated the Bulldogs in the second women's race of the afternoon. WSU finished the race in a time of 18:13.9 compared to Gonzaga's 19:08.1.

 

 

In the varsity four event, two WSU crews faced against each other. In the race, the Cougar "A" crew rowed to a time of 21:04.7, while the "B" crew finished the course with a time of 21:24.2.

In the novice eight race, the Gonzaga "A" crew, 20:15.8, and the Gonzaga "B" squad, 20:55.4 finished one-two with the WSU "A" crew finishing third in a time of 20:56.3. WSU "B" finished the race fourth with a time of 21:36.4.

On the men's side, the Gonzaga crew defeated the WSU men's club team in three races. The Bulldogs captured first place finishes in the varsity eight, the varsity four and the novice eight races.

The Cougars will take a weekend off before racing begins again Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Head of the Lake. Racing will begin at 7:00 a.m. on the Montlake Cut in Seattle.
