Varsity Eight Victorious Against Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. - Washington State University's varsity eight team opened the fall season with a victory against Gonzaga, Saturday at the Head of Spokane Regatta at the Spokane River.
In the 7,000m varsity eight race, the Cougars captured first place by 24 seconds, rowing a time of 22:48 to Gonzaga's 23:12. The WSU junior varsity squad took third place at 23:16, with the third varsity eight and Gonzaga's junior varsity eight rounding out the fourth and fifth spots respectively.
"I think it was a good first step," said WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "We have to keep growing over these next two weeks, so that we are able to showcase our best in Seattle at Head of the Lake."
Gonzaga captured the 7,000m novice eight race, finishing over a minute ahead of WSU. The Bulldogs rowed a time of 25:43, to WSU's 26:59.
In the 3,500m race, WSU's novice eight team (B) placed third with a time 13:44. Gonzaga's (B) squad finished first at 13:35 with their novice (C) team a second behind at 13:36. WSU's (C) and (D) squads captured fourth and fifth place.
The Cougars will return to the water Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Head of the Lake in Seattle.
