SPOKANE, Wash. - The Washington State University women's rowing team competed at a windy Head of the Spokane Saturday, winning four of its six races against the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

In the first 5,000 meter flight of the morning the varsity eight boat earned the fastest time of the day, 17:31, coming in 42 seconds ahead of the Gonzaga varsity eight. Finishing only two seconds behind the Bulldog varsity eight, the Cougar second varsity eight won its race with a time of 18:15.

"Everybody put a good effort in, and we learned a lot today," Washington State head coach Jane LaRiviere said.

In the first collegiate race for several members of the Cougar novice squad, the novice eight boat finished with a time of 21:45, nearly two minutes behind Gonzaga's novice eight time of 19:55. Later, in flight two, the second novice eight boat crossed the finish line 27 seconds ahead of the Gonzaga second novice eight, clocking a time of 21:26.

With the headwind dying down in the second women's flight of the morning, both teams revised their varsity eight lineups for a second race. The Cougars mixed varsity eight/second varsity eight boat finished with a time of 18:20, 25 seconds behind the Bulldog varsity eight crew. The third varsity eight claimed a three second victory over Gonzaga's third varsity eight, with a time of 19:03.

Washington State University will return to the Palouse to host the Head of the Snake Friday, Oct. 31, at Wawawai Landing.
