WSU Varsity Eight Victorious Against Gonzaga

Spokane, Wash. - The Washington State women's rowing team opened its fall season winning multiple races against Gonzaga, Saturday at the Spokane River.
"It was great to get out and start racing," WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "I am pleased with the way we raced today. We definitely were able to identify things we did well and things we need to improve on for our next three regattas."
In the first of three flights, the WSU varsity eight garnered a win its first race of the day. The varsity eight crew finished in a time of 11:32, giving them a 19-second victory. The Cougar second varsity eight boat tied for second with the Bulldog varsity eight boat, both finishing with a time of 11:51.
In the final race of the first flight, the WSU novice eight crews fell to Gonzaga's novice eight (A). The Bulldogs finished the race first, with a time of 12:52, while the Cougars' novice eight (A) came in second at 13:10, and the novice eight (B) finished third with a time of 14:32.
In the second flight, the WSU varsity eight finished with a time of 12:18 and the WSU second varsity eight finished with a time of 12:13 besting the times of both Gonzaga's varsity eight (12:18) and second varsity eight (12:53). In the novice eight race, both Cougar crews fell to the Bulldog novice eights. The Bulldog squads finished with times of 13:18 and 14:13, while the Cougars finished with times of 14:15 and 14:40. In the final race of the flight, the WSU varsity four (A) and varsity four (B) squared off. The varsity four (A) crew finished first with a time of 13:42, while the varsity four (B) finished 10 seconds later at 13:52.
In the final flight, the WSU varsity eight crew won their third race of the morning. With a time of 12:04, the Cougars defeated the Bulldog varsity eight crew by 25 seconds. The WSU second varsity eight crew finished third with a time of 12:35. In the varsity four race, the WSU varsity four (A) finished with a time of 13:56 and the WSU varsity four (B) with a time of 14:00 besting the times of both Gonzaga's varsity four crews.
In the novice race, the Gonzaga novice eight finished first with a time of 14:02, while the WSU novice eight (C) finished second with a time of 14:29.
The Cougar third varsity eight boat also finished the course with a time of 13:23.
The Cougars will compete again next weekend, Oct. 23 and 24, at the Head of Charles in Boston.
