Cougar Squads Come Up Short Against Washington

Seattle, Wash. - The Washington State University women's rowing squads competed hard but couldn't beat the Huskies at the Opening Day Regatta at Montlake Cut, Saturday.
The second varsity eight came in second in the Women's Erickson Cascade Cup, finishing two seconds behind the University of Washington. The Cougars recorded a time of 6:57.38 on the 2000m course bettering Oregon State's 7:05.73 and Notre Dame's 7:10.12.
In another close race, the varsity four fell to the UW(A) squad by less than five seconds. With a time of 8:00.81, WSU defeated three other crews, including the UW(B) squad.
The novice eight boat cut through the water with a time of 7:21.87 for third place, just behind Oregon State at 7:16.87, and UW at 7:06.82.
"I think we had a good day racing", WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "The second varsity eight and the varsity four were both competitive and I was pleased with their performance."
Cougar women's rowing will next compete Sunday, May 18, in the Pacific-10 Rowing Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
