No. 15 Ranked Cougar Varsity Eight Squad Defeats No. 25 Wisconsin at Montlake Cut

April 13, 2002

SEATTLE, Wash. - The conditions at Montlake Cut were not the best for rowing, but the competition was just right.

Washington State women's rowing No. 15 ranked varsity eight squad defeated No. 25 Wisconsin Saturday at Montlake Cut near Seattle. WSU crossed the line at 7:02.8, ahead of No. 25 Wisconsin's time of 7:15.5. WSU was just a few seconds behind No. 1 ranked Washington, closing the gap between the boats from last Sunday's Whittier Cup Grand Final by nearly eight seconds.

"It was a solid day for us overall," said Head Coach Tammy Crawford. "I was happy with closing the margin with Washington and completing our goal of defeating a good Wisconsin varsity eight boat."

The novice squad captured first Saturday, as it defeated Washington's novice boat for the second week in a row. WSU cut through the water with a time of 7:26.9 to UW's 7:35.7. On the season, the novice squad remains undefeated in five races against other novice eights.

In the second varsity eight race, WSU finished second with a time of 7:32.9 and the WSU varsity four boat finished third at 8:15.4 in its race.

Cougar women's rowing will next compete Sunday, April 21, against UC-Davis at Silver Lake near Spokane.
