Cougar Novice Squad Wins Grand Final in San Diego Crew Classic

April 7, 2002

MISSION BAY, Calif. - Washington State women's rowing novice squad has been racing without fear, while instilling it in its opponents. Sunday was no different.

In the women's novice Grand Final, WSU captured first place with a time of 6:59.2. The novice boat defeated the best the 2002 San Diego Crew Classic had to offer, as perennial nationally ranked schools Washington, California, and Virginia fell behind at the end. The victory earns WSU the Sea World San Diego Trophy.

Later Sunday, the varsity eight took to the water in its first Jessop-Whittier Cup Grand Final in two years. WSU crossed the finish line in seventh at 6:39.79, but was nearly 13 seconds faster than Saturday's competition.

"I am really proud of Vita (Scaglione) and what she has accomplished so far with the novice group this season," said Head Coach Tammy Crawford. "I think that the varsity eight has gotten stronger and we will continue to focus on improving."

Cougar women's rowing will next compete Saturday, April 13, against Washington and Wisconsin at Montlake Cut near Seattle.
