Three WSU Crews Head To Grand Finals At Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - The Washington State women's varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight crews advanced to their respective Grand Final races Saturday morning at the Crew Classic.
"I am happy with the way we raced against the tough competition," WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "Making it through to the Grand Final races gives all of our crews another opportunity to shine."
In the first heat of the Jessop-Whittier Cup, the WSU varsity eight crew, which is ranked 16th in the US Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Association NCAA Division I Poll, finished third with a time of 7:00.88 to earn a spot in the Grand Final race Sunday. Eighth-ranked California and No. 16 USC completed the heat in first and second, respectively, and each earn a spot in Grand Final. In the second heat of the cup, the top three finishers, No. 13 Stanford, No. 19 UCLA and No. 10 Tennessee, also advanced to the Grand Final.
The WSU second varsity eight squad solidified a spot in the Jackie Ann Stitt Memorial Trophy Grand Final, with a second place finish in its heat, rowing to a time of 7:04.4. Stanford won the heat, completing the course in 7:01.00. Joining the Cougs and Cardinal in the Grand Final race will be Texas and Pacific-10 Conference foes Cal, USC and UCLA.
In final the race of the morning for WSU crews, the novice eight became the third Cougar squad of the day to advance to a Grand Final race. The novice crew completed the course with a 7:15.11 time, finishing second in its heat. Texas' novice eight won the heat, finishing with a 7:11.27 mark. With a top-two finish in their respective heats, UCLA, Oregon State, Cal and San Diego State also advanced to the Grand Final to compete for the Sea World San Diego Trophy.

All three WSU crews will compete in the Grand Final races Sunday at the Crew Classic with racing starting at 7:30 a.m. The Cougar second varsity eight crew will race at 7:50, novice eight at 10:50 and the varsity eight squad will row in the final race of the day for WSU at 1:50 p.m.
