LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - The Washington State University women's rowing team reclaimed the Fawley Cup by defeating the Gonzaga Bulldogs Saturday at Liberty Lake. WSU tallied wins in each of five races against the Bulldogs, providing a successful outcome in the first competition of the season.

The Cougar Varsity eight earned the fastest time of the day, 6:46.90, finishing six seconds in front of Gonzaga. The second fastest time of the day, 6:48.54, belonged to the Cougar second varsity eight, putting them just two seconds behind the varsity eight's time.

"We came out ready to go," Washington State head coach Jane LaRiviere. "We executed our race plan and look forward to getting back at it in San Diego."

Both Cougar varsity four boats finished ahead of Gonzaga with times of 8:06.67 and 8:18.17 respectively. WSU's novice eight also won its race, finishing with a time of 7:19.13, six seconds ahead of Gonzaga.

Next weekend the Cougars will send their top boats to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic, while the rest of the team travels across the state to take part in the Husky Invite.
