Cougars Open Spring Season With A Victory Over Gonzaga

SPOKANE Wash. - The Washington State women's rowing team opened the spring season with a victory over Gonzaga in a dual regatta Saturday at Silver Lake.
The Cougars prevailed in every race en route to their win over the Bulldogs. In the varsity eight/second varsity eight race, the Cougars' varsity eight won with a time of 7:32.67. WSU's second varsity eight finished second with a time of 7:40.09 while Gonzaga's second varsity eight clocked a time of 8:14.93.
The results were the same in the varsity four, novice eight and novice four competitions as the Cougars took the top two positions in each race. The second varisty four crew defeated Gonzaga in a head-to-head match-up.
The Cougars' varsity four "A" squad clocked a time of 8:47.80 while the "B" squad rowed a time of 8:55.12 with Gonzaga at 9:21.08.
In the novice eight race, the Cougars' "A" crew rowed a mark of 8:07.13 while the "B" squad turned in a time of 8:30.43. Gonzaga was just behind at 8:31.41.
In the novice four event, WSU's "B" crew clocked a time of 9:03.20 while the Cougars' "A" squad finished with a time of 9:08.19. Gonzaga ended the race with a time of 9:30.82.
In the second varsity four race, the Cougars finished with a time of 8:27.8 to Gonzaga's 8:55.44.
"We raced very well in some tough conditions," WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "We had some improved performances as the day went on because almost everyone rowed twice."
The Cougars return to action when they travel to Redwood City, Calif. for the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic, March 27 & 28 at Redwood Shores Lagoon.
