Cougars Open Spring Season With A Victory Over Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Washington State women's rowing team opened its spring season winning multiple races against Gonzaga Saturday at Silver Lake.
The Cougar varsity eight crew earned the victory in the first race of the morning. The crew, who are ranked 18th in the US Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Preseason Poll, finished the opening race with a time of 7:28.1. The WSU second varsity eight squad earned second, finishing the 2,000 meter course with a time of 7:37.3. Coming in third was the Bulldog second varsity eight crew with a time of 7:53.1.
In first flight of fours racing, the WSU varsity four "A" squad clocked a time of 8:29.4, to earn the win. Placing second was the WSU "B" crew, finishing with a time of 8:45.4. The Gonzaga varsity four "A" squad placed third rowing to a 8:57.7 finish.
WSU's varsity four "C" squad edged out the Bulldogs' varsity four "B" crew in the second flights of fours. The Cougars rowed a time of 8:59.7, while Gonzaga finished the race with a mark of 9:01.3. The Bulldog "C" crew placed third finishing the race in a time of 9:22.1.
The novice eight crews faced off in the final race of the morning. The Gonzaga novice squad captured the only Bulldog victory of the morning, rowing a time of 8:20.1. The WSU "A" crew finished the race with a time of 8:31.5, while the WSU "B" squad earned a mark of 9:00.1.
The Cougars will return to the water March 26 when they travel to Corvallis, Ore. to take on the Oregon State Beavers.
