Cougars Down Portland State 69-39
Dec. 3, 2004
PULLMAN, Wash. - Emma Joneby scored a career-high 15 points to lead a balanced Washington State scoring attack in the Cougars' 69-39 win over Portland State in women's basketball action, Friday at Friel Court.
WSU improved to 3-2 while Portland State dropped to 0-5.
Joneby led a quartet of Cougars who scored in double figures. Kate Benz (11 points), Adriane Ferguson (10 points) and Ariana Scales (10 points) completed the contingent. Ferguson, a sophomore from Spokane, Wash., has now scored in double figures in four consecutive games.
"We had four people in double figures (in scoring) and five people with five or more rebounds and that's a real positive," WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said.
The Cougars out-rebounded PSU 54-31. Joneby led the team and just missed a double-double with a game-high nine boards. Benz (eight), Ferguson (six), Scales (five) and Jessica Perry (five) also garnered at least five rebounds.
The 39 points allowed by WSU were the fewest since the Cougars defeated Gonzaga 88-37, Nov. 22, 1992. In addition, the 30-point margin of victory was the largest for WSU since it defeated Wyoming 94-49, Nov. 24, 1998.
WSU never trailed and was tied only once (at two) en route to winning its second home game against no defeats this season.
Up 13-9 at the 13:09 mark of the first half, the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to take a 20-9 advantage with 10:54 remaining.
After a PSU bucket brought the Vikings back to single-digits at 20-12, the Cougars ripped off 16 consecutive points to take a 36-12 at the 4:59 mark of the half.
WSU held the Vikings to 17-of-62 shooting (27.4 percent) for the game including 7-of-29 in the first half. Conversely, WSU shot 17-of-32 (53.1 percent) in the first half en route to taking a 41-16 halftime lead.
"They (Portland State) took some outside shots that I thought were forced," Murrell said. "They were really driving on us hard in the second half and defensively I thought we stopped the drive. We did a good job."
WSU returns to action Thursday, Dec. 9 at Fresno State. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
