Nov. 24, 2001
PROVO, Utah - Francine McCurtain led a contingent of three Washington State players who scored in double figures with 18 points in the Cougars' 94-67 defeat to the BYU Cougars in women's basketball action Saturday at the Marriott Center.
Every one of McCurtain's points came from three-point territory as the freshman from Chinle, Ariz., shot at a 67 percent clip (6-of-9) from outside the arc. All but one of McCurtain's treys came in the second half as the guard converted 5-of-6 three-points attempts in the second half. Senior Brittney Hawks and freshman Emma Joneby added 12 points to WSU's cause.
While McCurtain was hot from three-point territory during the second half, WSU (0-3) was unable to overcome a scorching shooting performance by BYU (2-1) throughout the game.
BYU shot 36-of-64 (56.3 percent) from the floor including 13-of-19 from three-point land (68.4 percent). In recording its shooting performance, BYU was consistent in both halves, shooting at a 57.1 percent clip (20-of-35) in the first half and 55.2 percent (16-of-29) in the second.
"I thought BYU did a good job with its shooting but I also think they sensed a lot of uncertainty from our defense," said WSU Head Coach Jenny Przekwas.
Erin Thorn led a group of three BYU players in double figures with 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Danielle Cheesman scored 15 and Kali Taylor added 11 for BYU.
With the game tied a four at the 17:26 mark of the first half, BYU went on a 25-4 run over the next 7:45 to take a commanding 29-8 lead with 9:41 left. During the run, BYU was perfect from three-point territory making all five of its attempts.
Down 34-12 at the 8:21 mark of the half, the Cougars outscored BYU 10-3 over the next 3:54 to cut the deficit to 37-22 with 4:27 left.
BYU rebounded and closed out the half on a 12-4 run to take a 49-26 lead into the half. BYU would extend its lead to as much as 33 in the second half.
The Cougars return to action with their season home opener Monday, Nov. 26 against Portland State. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
