Wyoming Downs Cougars 82-51
Nov. 22, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's Bianca McCall grabbed 19 rebounds to tie her for the sixth-best single-game rebounding performance in WSU history in the Cougars' 82-51 loss to the University of Wyoming, Friday at Friel Court.
McCall's effort tied the junior from Santa Rosa, Calif., with three other Cougars (Janet Kusler, 1976; Gail Houser, 1977; Brittney Hawks, 2001) who hit the 19-rebound mark. Jennifer Grey holds the school record with 22 rebounds in a game, having done it twice in 1975.
McCall's contribution wasn't limited to the boards as she scored 18 points tying her with Lindsey Egeland for the team-high point total. Ashley Elliot led a contingent of three Wyoming players in double figures with 19 points.
The Cowgirls went on a 22-0 run over a 4:40 span in the first half to erase any doubt as to the outcome of the contest. Wyoming used that run to take a 50-23 halftime advantage as the team shot 20-of-35 (57.1 percent) from the field in the first half. Conversely, WSU struggled, shooting 8-of-28 (28.6 percent) from the floor and committing 17 turnovers in the game's first 20 minutes.
"Wyoming came out with a lot of defensive pressure and we didn't execute anything tonight," said WSU Coach Sherri Murrell. "I think all of our points came off of rebounds and put backs."
WSU fell behind by a 54-23 margin in the opening moments of the second half but used a 10-0 run to cut its deficit to 54-33 with 13:22 remaining. Wyoming outscored WSU by a 32-28 margin in the second half.
"Overall, I'm glad that the kids competed," added Murrell. "We're down by 27 at the end of the first half and only lose by four (in the second half). I don't think that is something that has happened in the past years."
The Cougars were without the services of four players - Sarah Barrett, Ravon Justice, Jessica Ottmar and Jessica Perry - who all sat out with injuries.
WSU hits the road for its next outing at Montana State, Monday, Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. Pacific.
