PULLMAN, Wash. - Led by a balanced scoring attack, the Washington State Cougars defeated Mirabel Banska Bystrica (Slovakia) 68-34 in a women's basketball exhibition game at Friel Court, Saturday.

A total of 11 players saw action for the Cougars, as nine made a dent on the scoreboard. Freshman Francine McCurtain headed a pack of three Cougars who scored in double-digits with 15 points. In recording her game-high point total, McCurtain hit three treys and converted on all six of her free throw attempts. Sophomore Lindsey Egeland added 12 points, while senior Brittney Hawks chipped in 11 points.

"It was a good opportunity for our freshmen to get the jitters out and experience what college basketball is all about," said WSU Head Coach Jenny Przekwas of the exhibition.

Washington State outscored Slovakia 36-12 in the second half and forced their European opponents, who only had five players that logged any minutes, into 33 turnovers. In the second half, the Cougars held Slovakia to 5-of-23 shooting from the field (.217).

"I thought Slovakia was pretty good," Przekwas added. "They just didn't have many players and they ran out of gas as we picked up our intensity in the second half."

Egeland led the Cougars, who won the rebounding battle 41-34, with six rebounds and joined McCurtain in leading the team with three assists.

Jana Pavlikova led Slovakia with eight points, shooting 3-of-5 from the field. She also had a game-high nine rebounds and two blocks.

The Cougars jumped out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back, taking a 32-22 lead into halftime.

WSU begins the regular season next week at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Cougars open up the tournament against Hawaii, Saturday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. Pacific.
