CORVALLIS, Ore. - When the Washington State Cougars were hot, or rather when Tricia Lamb was hot, she was really hot, but when the Cougs were cold they were frozen and the end result was a 57-54 setback to the host Oregon State Beavers before a crowd of 1,048 Friday night at Gill Coliseum.

Lamb, the Pac-10's leading scorer, led all players with 26 points, including 12 in a three-minute period during the second half as she brought WSU (7-6 overall, 1-3 in Pacific-10 play) back from an 11-point deficit. Alke Dietel, who had 13 rebounds, was WSU's number two scorer with just eight points.

Tammy Arnold came off the bench to scored 15 in leading OSU (10-4, 2-3) to the win, while Cherrith Wiersma added 10 and Reda Kakeranaite controlled the boards with 15 rebounds.

WSU started strong against the young Beavers, who played four freshmen much of the game. Lamb scored five of WSU's first seven points and the Cougars jumped to a quick 10-1 lead three minutes into the game.

With just over eight minutes to play in the first half the Cougars had their biggest lead, 23-13 on Sheri Quinton's layin. But then the Cougars went cold - for over 20 minutes.

Oregon State took advantage to outscore WSU 10-3 over the final seven minutes of the opening half.

Then, trailing 26-23 at halftime, OSU kept up the run by outscoring the Cougars 15-3 over the first eight minutes of the closing half. During the 15 minutes, the Beavers outscored WSU 25-6 with Cherrith Wiersma scoring 10. The Beavers kept up the pressure and eventually outscored WSU 32-10 over a period of 21 minutes.

At one point WSU had just one field goal in a 10 minute stretch late in the first half and for over eight minutes of the second half. In all, the Cougars shot just 33.3 percent (19-57), the lowest total of the season. WSU also lost the battle of the rebounds with Oregon State out boarding the Cougs 52-33.

Still, WSU had a chance to win a game that included 44 fouls, 26 on WSU, and 43 turnovers, 24 by OSU.

Trailing by 12 points 45-33, Jennifer Kerns started WSU's late surge with a three-pointer. Lamb then followed with two treys as WSU ripped off nine quick points. A rebound basket by Kakeranaite halted the run momentarily, but Jennifer Stinson then hit one of two free throws, Lamb made a three-point play with a layin and free throw, then hit three of four free throws to put WSU on top 49-47, completing a 16-2 run.

Dietel then followed a OSU free throw with a three-pointer and WSU led 52-48 with two minutes, 48 seconds left in the game. Arnold's rebound bucket with 36.4 seconds left finally gave OSU a 53-52 lead and Kakeranaite then threw in a layin for a 55-52 Beaver lead.

Lamb went back to the charity stripe with 22.6 seconds left on the clock and hit two free throws, but the Cougars could not get the clock stopped for nearly 20 seconds while OSU played keep-a-way. Chassie Wiersma, Cherrith's twin sister, then hit two free throws for the final margin of victory for OSU.

Next action for the Cougars will be Sunday at Oregon in a 1:00 p.m. game to be shown live by FOX Sports Net.
