PULLMAN, Wash. - Tricia Lamb's 23 points and 17 from Alke Dietel paced host
Washington State to a 94-49 women's basketball win over the visiting
Wyoming Cowgirls here Tuesday.
Four Cougars (3-0) scored in double figures, with Cathy McNeely adding 17
and Sheri Quinton 12. WSU raced to an early lead, led 46-25 at halftime and
never let up dominating Wyoming (1-2). Carrie Bacon scored 11 and sister
Christy Bacon added 10 for the visitors.
The Cougars jumped to a quick 15-4 lead on the strength of Quinton's two
baskets and four points from Lamb. Dietel, Lamb and Quinton each scored 10
points as the Cougars put up 36 shots in the first half, making 17. WSU
forced the Cowgirls into 20 first-half turnovers and 37 for the game.
WSU shot 44 percent for the game and 43 percent from the three-point area.
Victoria Harrod, with eight rebounds, and seven from McNeely, paced the
Cougars to a 44-36 advantage on the boards.
"Our defensive pressure and the turnovers we forced, especially in the
first half, were the keys," Cougar coach Harold Rhodes said. "We just came
off a long trip from Vermont, but we had the same intensity we showed in
the first two games," he noted. WSU won the title game at Vermont with an
18-point victory.
The Cougars were methodical in building their 21-point first half lead.
Five minutes into the contest WSU held an 11 point lead 17-6. Five minutes
later it was 28-14 and with five minutes to play in the first half the
Cougs led by 17 at 36-19.
It was more of the same in the second half as Washington State build up a
41 point lead, 88-47, on Volkman's two free throws with three minutes to
play. A layin by Jennifer Kerns with nine seconds to play produced WSU's
biggest lead, 45 points.
Lamb led WSU in the second half with 13 points, including three treys, as
Rhodes went to his bench often. All 11 Cougars who played dented the
scoring column.
The next action for the Cougar women will be Dec. 4-5 when WSU hosts
American University, Bowling Green and Colorado in the Cougar Shootout.
