Women's Hoops Defeats Appalachian State
Lamb's 33 leads WSU to win.
November 20, 1998
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Tricia Lamb's 33 points led Washington State to a
96-77 women's basketball victory over Appalachian State in the opening
round of the Howard Bank Classic, hosted by the University of Vermont.
Lamb's offensive performance equaled the ninth best one-game scoring total
in WSU (1-0) history. She had scoring help from Cathy McNeely with 16,
YvonneVolkman with 13 and Jennifer Kerns with 10. Alke Dietel, held to 7
points, had a game-high eight rebounds.
Appalachian State (0-1) was paced by Lucia Borcinova's 19 points and 17
from Beth Schoolfield.
The Cougars raced to a 49-32 halftime lead while forcing 22 Mountaineer
turnovers. Lamb scored 13 and McNeely 11 in the opening 20 minutes. For the
game, the Cougars benefited from 35 ASU turnovers.
"I was very pleased how we came out at the beginning and established
control," Cougar coach Harold Rhodes said. "We played great defense and
forced them into a quicker paced game than they wanted."
Appalachian State cut WSU's halftime advantage to eight points late in the
contest, 79-71. With four minutes to go WSU held a nine-point advantage,
86-77, but from then on it was all Cougars, with WSU scoring the final 10
points of the game.
"Appalachian State worked hard to get back in the game, but our kids didn't
panic when they cut into our lead," Rhodes observed. "When we needed a shot
Trish (Lamb) got it for us and when we needed a rebound Sheri (Quinton) got
it."
Of Lamb's shooting performance, Rhodes said "Trisha had an unbelievable
night shooting." The Cougar sophomore knocked down six three-point shots,
one short of the school record, and ended the night hitting 13 of her 23
shots, including 6-of-11 from outside the arc. She also grabbed five rebounds.
After ASU took a brief 4-2 lead, WSU scored six straight for an 8-4 lead
and never trailed. Lamb scored on a foul shot and a free throw to complete
a three-point play that gave WSU the lead for good 5-4, then hit another
layin after Dietel's single free throw.
Six minutes into the game WSU held a 19-10 lead that they slowly expanded
to 23 points, 45-22, with three minutes to play. ASU outscored the Cougars
10-4 over the final three minutes of the half to cut WSU's lead to 17 points.
In addition to forcing 22 turnovers in the first half, WSU was credited
with 15 steals in the opening period, including four by Kerns.
