November 11, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's women's basketball team regained its once 16-point lead with just over a minute to play and held on to defeat Estonia's Tallinn Juniors 75-70 in exhibition action at Friel Court Wednesday.

The Cougars were led by 19 points and seven rebounds from Tricia Lamb, who drained four treys in the game. Alke Dietel contributed with 13 points and four rebounds, while Victoria Harrod and Cathy McNeely each scored 11.

The Juniors were led by Suri Luvandi's game-high 23 points on 10-of-20 from the field and three-of-three from the charity stripe. Katrin Esko added 18 points and Elina Vendla and Gerly Kostla tossed in 13 points each.

The Cougars dominated their foreign competitors in the first half, jumping out to a 13-4 lead and increasing their advantage to 16 points at the intermission.

In the second half, the Juniors responded, outscoring the Cougars 13-6 to close the gap. On the second of four straight three-pointers made by the club, the Juniors took their first lead 60-59 with 4:35 to play. WSU responded, by hitting two three-point goals down the stretch, including Jen Kerns' go-ahead bucket with 1:21 left that gave WSU a two-point lead.

Kerns' trey was her only field goal of the night, but the eleventh Cougar basket from beyond the arch. The Juniors made nine three-point goals in a losing effort.

"Even though we have a good perimeter shooting team, I would like to see us score from inside more," WSU head coach Harold Rhodes said. The Cougars were 11-of-20 from three-point land, but only 13-of-36 elsewhere.
