Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Rosetta Adzasu's game-tying three-point attempt with three seconds left rattled out for Washington State University and Arizona State University held on for a 47-42 Pac-12 Conference victory Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars (10-17, 4-11 Pac-12) rallied from a 19-point deficit with a little over nine minutes remaining but could not complete the comeback as a couple late buckets didn't fall. Arizona State improved to 18-8 overall and 9-6 in conference play despite not making a field goal over the final 6:50.

Sophomore guard Sage Romberg led WSU with 11 points and senior guard Jazmine Perkins added eight points and grabbed 13 points while becoming WSU's all-time leader in games played with 116. Adzasu finished with eight points while sophomore guard Brandi Thomas chipped in with seven points and a career-high 10 rebounds.

Romberg opened the game with a layin for the Cougars but Arizona State answered with eight points then used a 10-0 run over a five minute stretch to open up an 18-4 lead at the 7:39 mark.

WSU started to settle in as freshman forward Shalie Dheensaw made a nice move in the low post, connecting with lefthanded jumphook. Thomas later followed with a three, her seventh straight game with a three, from the right wing to spark an 8-2 run over the final 4:28 for the Cougs. Adzasu then added a free throw and Noyes capped the run with a layin and baseline jumper to second WSU into half trailing 22-14.

Washington State opened the second half with a jumper by Romberg from the top of the key. Minutes later, Perkins brought the Cougs within eight after a pair of driving layups to make it 28-20 at 14:06 mark.

The Sun Devils answered with an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 39-20 with 9:05 remaining but the Cougs didn't go away. Adzasu followed two free throws by Perkins with a long three and after a pair of ASU baskets, WSU came back with a 12-0 run and make it 43-37 with 1:16 left.

Arizona State hit a free throw and Romberg countered with a layup. The Cougs were forced to foul and ASU missed the free throw and Perkins grabbed the rebound and got fouled. She missed the free throw but the Sun Devils knocked the rebound out of bounds. Romberg promptly hit at a three from straight away to make it a two-point game with 32 seconds left.

WSU trapped on the ensuing inbounds pass and forced ASU into another turnover. Following a timeout by Washington State, the Sun Devils' conference leading defense got a stop and the Cougs were once again forced to foul. The Sun Devils missed the free throw attempt and Adzasu raced the length of the court and fired up a three that rattled in and out and ASU grabbed the rebound and went on to hit two more free throws to seal up the 47-42 victory.

The Cougars were held to 26.7 percent from the floor but grabbed a season-high 51 rebounds. ASU finished the game shooting 30.5 percent and forced WSU into 20 turnovers.

The Cougars will wrap up their road slate next weekend, traveling to Seattle to face University of Washington, Sunday at Noon. The game will be nationally televised by Fox Sports Net.
