Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Candace Fields tied a career-high with 12 points in the Washington State Cougars'68-40 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.

The loss was the Cougars' 12th in a row and dropped WSU to 2-15 overall and 0-7 in the Pac-10 Conference. The 12 straight losses by WSU established a school record for consecutive losses. Arizona State improved to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

Fields' effort led a contingent of three Washington State players that scored in double figures. Brittney Hawks scored 11 points and Francine McCurtain added 10 points to complete the trio.

Betsy Boardman led Arizona State with 16 points and Cian Carvalho added 11 points for the Sun Devils.

Up by a 6-4 margin in the early stages of the first half, Arizona State went on a 13-2 run over a 5:18 span to take a 19-6 lead with 12:03 remaining.

WSU found itself in foul trouble early in the first half, accumulating eight fouls in the first 6:08 of the game. Arizona State capitalized on the Cougars' foul problems making six of eight free throws during that stretch.

Facing a 23-8 deficit with 9:05 remaining in the half, WSU scored five consecutive points - all courtesy of McCurtain - to cut its deficit to 23-13 at the 7:32 mark.

Arizona State responded to the Cougars' run with one of its own, however. ASU scored 10 unanswered points, with five of those coming from Carvalho, to take a 20-point lead at 33-13 before settling for a 33-15 lead at halftime.

Up 40-23 at the 12:18 mark of the second half, the Sun Devils would extend their lead to 48-23 with an 8-0 run over a 2:45 span.

WSU would pull to within 19 at 51-32 with eight minutes remaining before an 11-0 ASU run opened up a 62-32 lead with 5:02 left in the game.
