UCLA Rallies To Defeat Cougars 76-64

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's Whitney Martindale scored a career-high 23 points and Brittney Hawks recorded her ninth double-double of the season in Washington State's 76-64 loss to the UCLA Bruins in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action, Sunday at Friel Court.
The loss dropped WSU to 2-13 overall and 0-5 in the Pac-10 while UCLA improved to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
In reaching her career-high mark in points, Martindale set career bests in field goals made (8), including a career-high four three-pointers. Hawks scored 14 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to record her 12th career double-double in points and rebounds at WSU.
Natalie Nakase led a contingent of three UCLA players that scored in double figures with 24 points. Shalada Allen added 16 points and Whitney Jones scored 12 points to complete the trio.
Down 55-46 at the 11:19 mark of the second half, the Bruins went on a 9-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Jones to tie the game at 55 with 7:48 remaining.
After both teams exchanged field goals, a Jones' basket gave UCLA its first lead since it led 4-3 at the 18:48 mark of the first half. Jones' bucket, which gave UCLA a 59-57 lead, initiated a 19-7 UCLA run that closed out the game.
In the second half, the Cougars were 9-of-30 (30 percent) from the field while UCLA shot 17-of-40 (42.5 percent). The roles were reversed in the first half, as it was UCLA that struggled from the floor making 10-of-37 attempts (27 percent). Conversely, WSU was 14-of-31 (45.2 percent) from the floor in the first half en route to taking a 34-27 halftime lead.
The Bruins immediately sliced their halftime deficit to one at 37-36 just over two minutes into the second half. The Cougars withstood the rally, outscoring UCLA 18-10 over the next 6:41 to take a 55-46 advantage before the Bruins began their comeback.
