Men's Golf Duo Signs with Washington State
Nov. 16, 2012
PULLMAN, Wash. - Nick Mandell and Blake Toolan have each signed a National Letter of Intent to play men's golf at Washington State University, beginning next fall, Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg announced, Friday.
"Nick and Blake are great players," Clegg said. "Both will be coming in ready to complete for spots on the team as freshman next fall and I expect them to be solid contributors throughout their respective collegiate careers."
A four-year captain and No. 1 player at Southridge High School in Kennewick, Wash., Mandell is also a guard on the Suns' basketball team. Heading into his senior season on the golf course, he has 10 tournament victories and has finished 12th, eighth and fourth as an individual at the state tournament. Last season, he was the individual district medalist and led Southridge to a state title.
"Nick is one of the top players in the state of Washington for the past two years," Clegg said. He is the best on the East side. He has a great personality and work ethic. I am thrilled he is coming to Washington State."
An all-state honorable mention as a junior, Toolan helped lead Brophy College Prep in Phoenix to a state title. In 2012, he reached the round of 32 at the State Am tournament. He won the 2009 SWPGA state championship and qualified for the 2011 US Junior Am.
"Blake is a very consistent ball striker who has had some success nationally," Clegg said. "He is typically very steady. He has grown up around Kirk Triplett (Pullman native, three-career PGA tour wins) and played golf with him, frequently. He has learned from a lot of pros how to compete and how to win."
