Cougars Complete Opening Round In Lead

Sept. 13, 2010

PULLMAN - The Washington State University men's golf team is hosting the second-annual Palouse Cougar Collegiate at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club, and the team completed Monday's first round with a one-stroke lead.

WSU kicked off its 2010-11 debut tournament with a bang, posting the lowest single-round team score in relation to par in school history. The Cougars had four golfers come in under par en route to a 17-under 271 at the par-72, 7,308-yard course. WSU leads the 16-team field and is one stroke ahead of second-place Portland, and nine strokes clear of third-place Loyola Marymount.

Senior Nick Ellis carded a 7-under 65, and entered the second round in sole possession of third place, one stroke back of the individual leaders. Ellis was 5-under (31) on the front nine. Junior Trent Sanders joined Ellis in the top 10, posting a 68 (-4) to finish the opening round in a tie for 10th.

Sophomore Hank Frame and redshirt freshman Cody Robinson each shot 69 (-3), and entered round two tied for 13th.

Redshirt juniors Chris Kneen and Ryan Jones and redshirt freshman Kyle Hurt, representing WSU's second team at the event, each shot an even-par 72, and are among 15 golfers tied for 23rd. WSU's second squad finished the opening round in 11th, ahead of Boise State, Seattle, Cal State Northridge, Utah Valley and Gonzaga.

The field is scheduled to play 36 holes today, and will complete the 54-hole tournament Tuesday.
