Tucker, Grigsby Lead Cougars to Third Place Finish

Sept. 7, 2008

USAFA, Colo. - The Washington State University men's golf team finished strong at the 40th annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational this weekend, finishing third at the par-72, 7,301 Eisenhower Golf Club's Blue Course. Juniors Kevin Tucker and Nick Grigsby each finished in the top 10 for the Cougars.

Tucker led the team throughout the tournament and finished in fifth place in the team's season-opener, the second-best finish of his WSU career.

"The guys played very well today in a very strong pairing; we beat UNLV in today's head to head matchup and they are a traditional golf powerhouse," WSU head coach Walt Williams said.

Tucker posted a three-round total of 211 (-5). The junior opened with a first-round score of 72 (E), a second-round 67 (-5) and finished with another even-par 72. The Kennewick, Wash., native finished in the top 25 to start off his season. His 11 career top 25 finishes rank ninth all-time at WSU.

Grigsby shot a three-round total of 215 (-1), finishing in a tie for ninth place. Junior Austin Hurt posted a score of 218 (+2), giving WSU a third golfer to finish in the top 25 (T-17th).

Sophomore Nick Ellis shot a 226 (+10) and freshman Trent Sanders wrapped up the Cougar scorers with a 228 (+12).

As a team the Cougars finished in third with a score of 865 (+1).

"That should give us a boost of confidence as we move through the fall schedule," Williams said. "Overall I think this was a very good start for my young guys and I'm relatively pleased with third place out of 16 Division I teams."

Next up for the Cougars is the Northwest Classic Tournament, Sept. 22, in Corvallis, Ore.
