PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University has named Garrett Clegg to direct its men's golf program, WSU Director of Athletics Bill Moos announced Thursday. Clegg replaces Walt Williams, who resigned his position last month.

"Garrett rose to the top of a quality field of candidates and is a great addition to our coaching staff," said Moos. "He has a proven track record as a fabulous recruiter and will be coaching student-athletes at a venue that is second-to-none in collegiate golf. He has coached and played at the highest levels and is passionate about building a championship program at Washington State."

Clegg arrives in Pullman after serving the past four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Washington. During his time at UW, the men's program captured back-to-back Pacific-10 Conference titles (2009 & 2010) and concluded both seasons with fifth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. Washington advanced to the NCAA Regionals each of his four seasons and three times qualified for the NCAA Championships.

"I want to thank Bill Moos and Anne McCoy for giving me the opportunity to lead the men's golf program," said Clegg. "I am excited to be a part of Cougar Athletics and begin forging the golf program's future in the Pac-12 Conference. I have been mentored these past four seasons by one of the best golf coaches in the country and am ready to put into practice what I have learned about coaching a nationally competitive team. I look forward to helping Cougar golf reach new heights."

While at Washington he helped mentor All-Americans Nick Taylor, Richard Lee, Darren Wallace and Chris Williams. In his four seasons he was involved in all areas of the program including coaching, recruiting, fund-raising and tournament operations with a special emphasis on administrative duties.

Clegg was recognized for his excellence in coaching during the 2010 season when he was named one of five finalists for the Jan Strickland Award presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf as selected by the GCAA. The Strickland Award is presented to the NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA or NJCAA assistant coach that, among other things, has excelled in working with their student-athletes both on the course and in the classroom.

Clegg, a native of Bountiful, Utah, is a former professional and collegiate golfer who played collegiately at Minnesota for two years where he was a part of the 2002 NCAA championship team before transferring to Utah for his final two seasons. A 2004 graduate of Utah, Clegg was a two-time All-Mountain West Conference selection and placed third in the conference championships in 2003. During his career with the Utes, he won the 2003 Nevada Wolfpack Invitational and the 2003 UC Riverside Invitational.

Clegg played in the 2003 U.S. Amateur and advanced to the second round of the 2002 U.S. Public Links tournament. As a professional, he played the 2007 season in the Nationwide Tour after finishing fifth in the second stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. Clegg and his wife Rachael have two daughters, Grace and Sophie, and son Brady.
