June 23, 2009

PULLMAN - A number of Cougars competing in the Washington State Golf Association's Men's Amateur Championship completed their first round of play Tuesday at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

Current WSU student-athletes participating in the event include Nicholas Grigsby (Spokane Valley, Wash.), Kevin Tucker (Kennewick, Wash.), Austin Hurt (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), Nick Ellis (East Wenatchee, Wash.) and Paul Mitzel (Mercer Island, Wash.).

Ellis and Tucker each posted even-par rounds of 72, while Mitzel shot 75 (+3), Grigsby shot 79 (+7) and Hurt shot 81 (+9). Ellis and Tucker are tied for 12th place, only four shots back of the tournament leaders.

Two of WSU's incoming freshmen, Hank Frame of Spokane, Wash., and Kyle Hurt of Bainbridge Island, Wash., are also competing. Each shot 74 (+2) in the first round, one stroke back of the top 25.

Former Cougar David Fern (Spokane, Wash.), who played for Washington State from 2004-06, fired an opening-round, 3-under 69 and enters Wednesday's second round in third. Fern led the team in scoring average in 2004-05 (74.0) and won the Inland Cup in 2005.

The four-round event consists of 18 holes each day (June 23-26), with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. An awards ceremony will be held Friday afternoon following the completion of the tournament. Spectators are welcome at no charge.
