June 7, 2005

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington State University's Maria Kostina, Jay-Lee Longbottom and Jordan Madison head a contingent of eight Cougars on the Pacific-10 Conference Golf All-Academic teams, which were announced by Commissioner Tom Hansen, Tuesday.

Kostina (Nakhabino, Russia) and Longbottom (Perth, Australia) earned women's first team selections while Madison (Pasco, Wash.) garnered a spot on the men's first team.

Kostina carries a 3.88 GPA in psychology while Longbottom has a 3.78 GPA in the same discipline. Madison boasts a 3.95 GPA in business administration.

Longbottom's selection marked her third appearance on the academic team as the outgoing senior garnered a first team nod in 2003 and followed that with a second team selection last year. Outgoing senior Kostina's first team selection followed up a first team pick in 2004. Madison, who will be a redshirt junior next year, garnered his second straight appearance to the first team.

The trio headed a total of eight Cougars on the academic team. Maria's sister, Anastasia Kostina (Nakhabino, Russia) and Kevin Chen (Alamo, Calif.) earned selections to the women's and men's second team, respectively.

Both student-athletes make their initial appearance on the team. Incoming senior Anastasia Kostina carries a 3.82 GPA in psychology while Chen, an incoming junior, has a 3.47 GPA in sport management.

Outgoing senior Kim Welch (Sacramento, Calif.) earned an honorable mention nod to the women's team as did incoming senior Stephanie Parsley (Chelan, Wash.) and incoming junior Heather O'Leary (Walla Walla, Wash.).

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
