WSU in Seventh at Border Olympics

Laredo,Texas- The Washington State men's golf team was led by sophomore Nick Ellis after two rounds today at the par-72, 7,125-yard Laredo Country Club. The Cougars posted a team score of 593, placing them in seventh place.

Ellis posted a 76 (+4) in the first round and then carded a 70 (-2) in the second round to finished day one in a tie for 12th place.

Freshman Trent Sanders finished day one in the top 25 for the Cougars. Sanders was even in the first round and carded a 76 (+4) in the second round to finish in a tie for 22nd place.

Freshman Paul Mitzel posted a two-round score of 149 (+5) to enter the final round in a tie for 30th place.

Wrapping up the Cougar scorers are juniors Kevin Tucker and Austin Hurt, who each finished in a tie for 60th place after posting a two-round score of 154 (+10).

"The top of the lineup struggled but the young guns kept us in the hunt!" said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams.

The Cougars posted a combined score of 299 in the first round and 294 in the second round.

"We are playing against a very strong field and are within striking distance of a nice finish," said Williams.
