LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Washington State men's golf team finished the first day of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate one stroke shy of first place. The Cougs will head into the final round Tuesday on the heals of tournament host, New Mexico State University at the par-71, 7,003-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course.

The Cougars posted a team total of 575 (+7) and finished the day ahead of UNLV, Idaho, Boise State, Kansas, Weber State, Air Force, Texas State, Illinois State, Nebraska, UTEP, Wichita State, Western New Mexico and Utah.

"This is the first time we have ever played this five together in an event," said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams. "We played solid today and are right in the hunt for a first place finish in tomorrows final."

Junior Trent Sanders led the way for the Cougars finishing tied for fourth carding a 141 (-1) and shot a 68 (-3) in the second round, a team low for the day.

Three additional Cougars enter the final day in the top 20. After missing the last tournament due to injury, senior Nick Ellis is back and tied for 10th carding a 143 (+1), freshman Kent Hagen finished tied for 14th shooting a 145 (+3) and sophomore Hank Frame is tied for 20th carding a 147 (+5).

Redshirt-freshman Kyle Hurt also had a strong showing and ending the day tied for 35th shooting a 150 (+8).

The hunt for first place will continue tomorrow morning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
