Four Cougars Shoot Even Par Or Better In First Round Of Barona Cup
Oct. 20, 2003
LAKESIDE, Calif. - With three underclassmen leading the way, the Cougar men's golf team fired a 3-under 285 and are in sixth place after the first round of the Barona Collegiate Cup at the Barona Creek Golf Course, a par 72, 7,088 yard course Monday.
Redshirt freshman Jordan Madison fired a team low 70 for the day with a 35 on both the front and back nines, leaving him at 2-under. Madison has finished in the Top 10 three out of the last four tournaments and is currently tied for 22nd place. Redshirt sophomore Paul Knue scorched a career low 71 (-1) and is tied for 26th, only one shot behind Madison.
Freshman Kevin Chen and senior Isaac Woods are tied for 28th and sit at even par shooting a 72 in the first round. Both Knue and Chen shot a team best 34 on the front nine. Senior Ryan Camp rounded out the Cougar team by shooting a 2-over 74. Camp is only four shots out of the Top 25.
By firing the second lowest single round score of the season, the Cougars only trail Texas El Paso by one stroke for fifth place. The Cougars are just one of three teams to have all four of their scoring players finish at even par or better for the day and are one of seven teams to finish the first round under par.
Although the entire field was originally scheduled to complete the first 36 holes Monday, darkness set in early and the second round was cut short. The second round will conclude Tuesday morning, with the final round following.
