FAIRFAX, Calif. - Freshman Chad Carlson leads the way for the Cougars by firing a two-over 73 in the first round of the MacKenzie Invitational at the Par 71, 6,585 yard Meadow Club Golf Course at Fairfax, Calif.

Carlson, a native of Goldendale, Wash., was consistent by shooting a 1-over on each of the front and back nines. Carlson's 73 is also the second lowest of his young WSU career next to the 71 recorded at the Vandal Classic Sept. 28.

Two rounds were supposed to be played, Monday, but darkness intervened, and the second round will be completed Tuesday morning, followed by the third and final round. UC-Irvine led all schools with a score of 272 after one round, and Mike Lavery of UC-Irvine shot his way to a 7-under par 64, and atop the leader board.

Heading into tomorrow's play, the Cougars sit in 16th place. Ryan Camp and Ryan Ressa shot identical rounds of 74, and sit tied at 49th. Dustin White is in a tie for 69th, and Isaac Woods is in a tie for 75th to round out the Cougar contingent.
