Cougar Men Win Season-Opening Event

PULLMAN - The Washington State University men's golf team finished in first place for the second time in as many years at the second-annual Palouse Cougar Collegiate at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club, Tuesday.
The Cougars entered the final round in first place with a 10-stroke lead over second-place Portland, and ended up winning the tournament by 12 strokes after posting a 284 (-4) in the third round. During the first and second rounds, WSU posted the second- and-third lowest single-round scores in school history in relation to par, respectively, with a 272 (-16 )and 284 (-4). WSU also posted the lowest 54-hole score in school history with an 827 (-37).
"I'm really proud of these guys. They played another under-par round today on a tough course," said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams. "It was a great performance, we broke numerous school records and it was a great win in front of the home fans."
All five Cougars playing on the varsity squad finished in the top 20 with four finishing in the top 10. Junior Trent Sanders shot up the leaderboard to take fourth with a three-round total of 206 (-10) and senior Nick Ellis finished tied for fifth with a three-round total of 207 (-11).
In his first collegiate event, redshirt freshman Cody Robinson finished seventh overall with a 208 (-8). Also making his Cougar debut, freshman Kent Hagen carded a 1-under 215, and led the Cougars in the second round with a 67 (-5). He finished tied for 20th.
Sanders, sophomore Hank Frame and Robinson finished under par in all three rounds. Frame finished with a three-round total of 209 (-7).
The Cougars' second team finished 11th ahead of Sacramento State, Cal State Fullerton, Gonzaga, Utah Valley and Seattle. Junior Paul Mitzel finished in the top 25 for the third time in his career. He shot a career-low 66 (-6) in the second round and finished with a 216 (E), tying for 22nd.
WSU will head to Seattle to compete in the Husky Invitational beginning Sept. 20.
