PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University men's golf team opened its 2012-13 season with a gritty performance to sit atop the leaderboard after 36 holes of the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate. Low temperatures and high winds complicated things for the field of 69 golfers Monday at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

The Cougars boast two players in the top three after the tournament's first complete day. Washington State senior Hank Frame led the way for the Cougar men in the team's first spot, finishing just one over par for the first two rounds despite the blustery winds. Frame carded scores of 76 and 69 in the first and second rounds, respectively. His combined score of 145 (+1) was the third best in the field.

Kent Hagen, a junior on WSU's squad, also bested the difficult conditions and shot one under par for the first two rounds. He was one of two players in the field to shoot under par, and is tied for the lead on the player leaderboard after day one with Arizona's Dylan Healey. Hagen did not qualify to take one of the Cougars' five team spots for the tournament, so he is playing as an individual.

The Cougars, who are 21-over as a team, built a three-stroke lead over Pac-12 foe Arizona, which sits in second place after the first two rounds of play. WSU also leads the tournament's defending champion, San Jose State, by 12 strokes. San Jose State rests at third on the leaderboard going into Tuesday's final round.

Tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m. for the final round of the tournament. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com for the tournament's duration. Full tournament results and recap will be available at the conclusion of the tournament at wsucougars.com.
