Seniors Shine During Opening Day of Pac-12 Championships
April 27, 2012
The Cougars finished the first day of competition 13-over (733), with seniors Trent Sanders and Branden Dalton leading the team. Both Sanders and Dalton recorded a 73 (+1) in round one and a 72 (E) in round two. Their two-round total of 145 (+1) places them in a tie for 15th overall in the tournament.
"Our seniors are leading us and that is what you like to see," stated Washington State Head Coach Garrett Clegg. "Trent was a little up and down all day, but he battled hard to get the ball in the hole. Branden played his best 36 holes of golf today, and this being his senior year and his final match, I'm really happy for him."
Half-way through the tournament the Cougars sit only 14 strokes back from tournament leader UCLA (-1, 719), and only six shot back of its closest competition, Oregon State (+7, 727).
Other members of the Washington State team are freshman Michael Anderson, tied for 28th (+3, 147), junior Hank Frame, tied for 37th (+5, 149), sophomore Kent Hagen, tied for 42nd (+6, 150) and sophomore Jarrett Foot, tied for 61st (+10, 154).
"We played really good golf today," added Clegg. "We have some things to clean up, like we need to play sharper on our Par-5s, but overall we played solid. We put ourselves in a good position to be in it through the final two rounds."
The Cougars return to action Saturday, when they will play round three of the Pac-12 Championship. Day two of the competition will start with tee times beginning at 9:00 a.m. from the first and 10th holes.
