Tucker in Third at Thunderbird Invitational

April 2, 2010

TEMPE, Ariz. - Kevin Tucker is in a tie for third after the first day of the Thunderbird Invitational, held at the par-71, 7,057-yard Karsten Golf Course.

Tucker finished the day with 13 birdies on his way to carding two rounds of three-under-par 68 to finish in a two-way tie for third. The senior will tee off tomorrow, one stroke behind San Diego State's J.J. Spaun and three strokes behind the leader Steve Lim, of USC.

Fellow senior Austin Hurt finished second for the Cougars with a two-round total of 144 (+2), good enough for a share of 34th. The Bainbridge Island, Wash., native will tee off tomorrow in search of the 19th top-25 finish of his career, which would put him in a tie for sixth on the Cougar all-time list.

After carding an opening-round of 76 (+5), freshman Hank Frame fired an even-par 71 to finish the day in a tie for 56th. Junior Nick Ellis and senior Nick Grigsby finished with first-day totals of 152 and 157, respectively.

The Cougars were aggressively competing with the tournament field which includes nine teams ranked in Golfweek's top 25. WSU ended the day in 12th place, topping No. 24 California by six strokes. The team will look to make up some ground tomorrow as four ranked teams are within five strokes of the Cougars heading into the final round Saturday.

"Tucker played fantastic and Austin was really solid as well," said WSU Coach Walt Williams. "We came in seeded 15th and are in 12th, but when we play well tomorrow and move up, it is going to give us a lot of confidence going into the home stretch of the spring."

Play will resume tomorrow with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. Check www.golfstat.com for live results.
