Carlson and Kostina Take Individual Titles to Lead Cougars to Inland Cup Victory
Feb. 27, 2006
CLARKSTON, Wash. - It may have been cloudy outside, but it did not stop Washington State golfers Anastasia Kostina and Chad Carlson from shinning brightly on the course as they captured both the men's and women's individual titles, respectively, at the Inland Cup, held at the par-72, Clarkston Country Club, Monday, Feb. 27.
Washington State won the team title for both the men's and women's teams, marking the second consecutive year for the women and the 10th consecutive year that the men have garnered the title. The women shot a single-round combined total of 298, while the men counted five for a combined total of 363.
The Clarkston Country Club Golf Course was played at a par-72 and carried for 6,770 yards for the men and 6,103 yards for the women.
Carlson, who competed as an individual for the Cougars, shot a season-low single round score 69 (-3), finishing two strokes ahead of his competitors. This performance marks Carlson's third top 10 finish, and the second time he has taken the title at the Inland Cup.
Not to be forgotten on the course is All-American Anastasia Kostina, who fired a 1-under 71 to claw her way to the top of the charts, edging out teammate Amy Eneroth by one stroke to take the title. This marks Kostina's 17th top 10finish, and her 22nd finish in the top 25. Eneroth shot an even 72 on the day to complete the tournament in sole possession of second, marking her second consecutive top 10 finish.
On the men's side, junior Kevin Chen shot a 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for second, recording his sixth career top 10 finish. Jordan Mason shot an even 72 for the day, placing him in a tie for fourth, while teammates Ryan Witz and Chris Collins both shot a single round score of 73, tying them in a knot at sixth.
The women's team made their mark on the charts as seven of the eight women finished the tournament in the top 5. Redshirt junior Heather O'Leary and sophomore Brooke Henderson both shot a 76 on the tournament, knotting themselves in a tie for third. This marked Henderson's first top 10 finish as a Cougar and O'Leary's first one of the season. Stephanie Parsley competed as an individual and completed the single-round tournament in 12th place.
The only two men not to finish in the top 10 were Jordan Madison and Matt Fladwood. Madison fired a 74 to tie him in a knot for 12th, while Fladwood competed as an individual and shot a 75, to tie for 14th to round out the Cougar contingent.
The men's team returns to action at the Washington National Championship at Auburn, Wash., March 6-7, while the women prepare for competition at the Pinehurst Invitational at Pinehurst, N.C., March 12-14.
