SAN DIEGO - Washington State reached the 10-win plateau for the third time in as many seasons with a 28-20 comeback victory over No. 5 Texas in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.
Trailing 10-7 at intermission, the No. 15 Cougars scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to take a commanding 26-10 lead into the final stanza.
Washington State's lone first half score came with 59 seconds left in the second quarter when Matt Kegel found Sammy Moore for a 12-yard touchdown pass. The score tied the game 7-7 before Texas added a field goal four ticks before halftime.
The Cougars' third quarter fireworks began with a 54-yard scoring strike from Kegel to Moore. Running back Jonathan Smith scored out of the wildcat formation from 12 yards outs and Jason David returned a fumble 18 yards to cap the outburst. A missed PAT and a blocked PAT kept the score at 26-10.
Washington State's defense recorded a safety in the fourth quarter to account for the Cougars' final points. WSU's defense forced three turnovers and recorded seven sacks, three by D.D. Acholonu.
