TUCSON, Ariz. - Washington State raced out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and the No. 18 Cougars defeated Utah 31-28 in the Weiser Lock Copper Bowl.
Shaumbe Wright-Fair, who finished with a game-high 123 yards on the ground, scored 1:35 into the game and added a second 3-yard touchdown run with 1:20 left in the opening stanza to help Washington State build its lead. In between Wright-Fair's scoring runs, Phillip Bobo tied a school record with an 87-yard touchdown reception.
After the Utes closed within 21-14, Bobo pulled in a 48-yard scoring strike from Drew Bledsoe with 31 ticks left in the first half to extend the Cougars' lead to 14. Bledsoe finished with a school record 476 yards on 30-for-46 passing. Bobo caught seven passes for 212 yards while C.J. Davis recorded eight receptions for 134 yards.
Utah scored two touchdowns in a span of 3:24 in the third quarter to draw even, 28-28 enter the final 15 minutes. With 6:29 left in the game, John Rushing forced a fumble that was recovered by Singor Mobley and returned 15 yards to the Utah 21 setting the Cougars up for the winning score.
That score came off the foot of Aaron Price, who booted a 22-yard field goal with 5:08 remaining. The Cougars finished with 636 yards of offense while Utah gained 495 yards.
