PULLMAN, Wash - Washington State University opened the 2012 season under head coach Mike Leach with a two-hour workout on Rogers Field Thursday afternoon.

The Cougars were in helmets only and worked through a number of drills in their first official practice of fall camp. Throughout the day, veterans could be seen showing the newcomers where to go, how to transition from each segment and how to get the most out of every rep. There was a lot of communication, some louder than others, throughout day.

WSU opened practice similar to spring workouts, working through some individual drills before breaking off to go one-on-one. The Cougars later went 7-vs.-7 on the west field while the lineman, linebackers and running backs squared off in a running game drill on the east field.

The highlights came during the team segment at the end of the day as quarterback David Gilbertson found Rahmel Dockery on a pair of deep passes that each went for scores. Later on, it was cornerback Damante Horton who lept high to snatch an interception while he dragged his feet in bounds.

The defense forced turnovers later in the afternoon as veteran cornerback Nolan Washington registered two interceptions, with the first coming off a tipped pass and the second coming off an errant Jeff Tuel throw in the end zone.

Tuel rebounded later in the day with a long touchdown pass to Marquess Wilson that brought a couple yells from the offensive players and attending fans. Quarterback Connor Halliday made a couple nice throws in a team segment, highlighted by a bullet to senior wideout Gino Simone in traffic for a big gain that brought some cheers from the offense.

The Cougars continue fall camp 2:45 p.m. Friday with another workout in helmets-only before adding shoulder pads Saturday.
