Defense Highlights Spring Scrimmage in Martin Stadium
April 7, 2012 VIDEOS: Jeff Tuel | Andrei Lintz PULLMAN, Wash. - Jeff Tuel threw two touchdown passes and the defense registered 12 sacks during Washington State's scrimmage at Martin Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Cougars worked through 110 plays on sunny day in front of a couple hundred fans. The defense highlighted the day with 12 "sacks" and four takeaways as a sack was awarded to the defense when they were able to grab the quarterback. Defensive end Logan Mayes led the way with four sacks while defensive tackle Xavier Cooper added three. Travis Long, Jordan Pu'u Robinson, Anthony Laurenzi, Lenard Williams and Eddie Releford each recorded a sack. T he defense also saw Mitchell Peterson, Kyle McCartney and Daniel Simmons pick off passes and Matthew Simmons and Casey Locker combine to force a fumble on the day's opening series. The offense settled in and received a couple big plays from Andrei Lintz and Gino Simone early on as Lintz caught a pass from Tuel and rumbled 40 yards for a big gain. Lintz capped the No. 1 offense's first drive with a three-yard touchdown catch from Tuel. Newcomer wideout Rahmel Dockery made the most of his only catch, leaping high to corral an 11-yard touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone from Cody Clements. Simone led all receivers with seven catches for 101 yards including a 43-yard touchdown from David Gilbertson. Bobby Ratliff also continued his impressive spring with five catches for 74 yards including a 26-yard score from Tuel. Isiah Myers later caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Clements before Carl Winston capped the scoring with a three-yard touchdown run. Marquess Wilson caught two passes for 51 yards, opening the day with a leaping 40-yard reception from Tuel. Simmons' interception came late in the day as he held off Wilson to pick off a Tuel pass in the back of the end zone and drag is left foot inbounds to give the defense is final turnover. Tuel completed his first six passes and finished the day 19 of 33 for 253 yards and two touchdowns and Gilbertson went 15 of 26 for 192 yards and a score.
