PULLMAN, Wash. - In response to newspaper articles about comments made by Washington State University head football coach Paul Wulff regarding Eastern Washington University, Wulff had the following statement:

"It was brought to my attention that comments I made this week about the `culture' at Eastern Washington University and its football program over the past two decades were misconstrued by some. I have taken responsibility for violations at Eastern Washington while I was head coach and accept the penalties. The reality is that over the past 20-plus years the head coach at Eastern Washington has had to serve many roles in addition to coaching football, such as compliance, eligibility and academic advisor. My comments that this has been going on at Eastern Washington for the last two decades was intended to reflect the duties of the head coach having to wear more than one hat. Nothing else should be read into that.

"I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for my predecessors, Coach Zornes and Coach Kramer. Both of these men gave me opportunities to develop, and in Coach Zornes case, start my coaching career. To this day both continue to have a tremendous impact on me as a head coach. It would be wrong to insinuate they were anything but 100 percent professional and completely dedicated to representing Eastern Washington University in a positive manner.

"Having been a part of the Eastern Washington University football program for almost two decades I can say with absolute certainty that the university is a special place and those involved with the program are wonderful people. It is my hope that the recent news involving myself and Eastern Washington University does not overshadow all the efforts and tremendous accomplishments the university has seen over the years."
